Workshop in Schools
Since 2007, we have been offering workshops specifically for young people ages 13 and older at schools, social service agencies, and integration centers.
You can’t choose how or whom you love. But we can decide how we want to deal with diversity in society. Same-sex marriage and adoption by gay and lesbian couples are now legal in Austria. Diversity in our society is growing, which inevitably raises questions about these new family structures and role models. When it comes to equality, we live in one of the most progressive countries in the world. But laws alone do not create social acceptance.
This workshop aims to raise awareness among young people that there are different—yet equally valid—ways of loving and living. “Gay” should no longer be considered a slur, and people should not shy away from using the term descriptively. For a young person, coming out is still a huge step in the process of discovering their own identity, and young people should be empowered and supported through acceptance in their everyday lives. Among other things, this requires the opportunity to discuss these topics openly. Our workshop offers that opportunity.
Schedule
The focus is on countering prejudices related to gender stereotypes and questioning social norms. The workshop is structured in individual modules so that it can be tailored to the class’s interests and the time available. However, the following topics are covered in every workshop:
Brainstorming “Love”
Love is gender-neutral, and there is more than just heterosexuality. We usually come up with various family structures very quickly, which we use as the basis for the workshop that follows. Terms can also be explained this way.
Stereotypes
We try to break down stereotypical thinking by showing that one cannot infer someone’s sexual orientation or social status based on outward appearances.
“Gay” as a Slur
Through thought-provoking questions, we encourage students to stop using “gay” as a slur.
Legal Situation in Austria
A short questionnaire on the current legal landscape (marriage, family law, discrimination, etc.) is used to first assess the situation and then clarify it. This demonstrates how far legal equality for homosexuals has come and where discrimination still exists.
Global Legal Situation
An interactive game examines how different regions of the world handle human rights issues. The students’ countries of origin are also incorporated into the discussion.
Historical Developments
Methods for taking a historical look at the evolution of laws in Austria and around the world provide a tangible insight into the factors that shape how society and its laws develop.
Is Being Heterosexual Normal?
In one scenario, heterosexual people are portrayed as a minority and must confront discrimination and the struggle for equality.
Personal Connection
The workshop leaders’ own experiences and expertise are particularly valuable for young people when it comes to topics such as coming out, potential discrimination in everyday life, and dealing with critics.
Black Box
Students can ask questions anonymously, which are then answered by the team.
General Information
Costs
– A fee of 80 EUR is required per workshop.
– For workshops outside of Graz, we charge 30 EUR for travel expenses.
If there is no budget available for the workshop, we’ll be happy to find a solution.
